Such a charming building and a beautifully captured image.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:48 in reply to thenecromancer
Thank you; this church is almost 900 years old.

Few buildings built today would last 100 years and certainly not have the charm and grace.

The metal frame makes ideal foundations for the nest.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:49 in reply to thenecromancer
That was probably the idea. BTW, if you download that pic and take a close look, youยดll find more than just one bird.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 16:46 in reply to moonshine123
Even without downloading, I spotted three other birds. First one on the lower left, akin to a Sparrow or Swift, and then the yellowish one on the far right, at the midpoint of the nest, which is akin to a tit. And lastly, I spotted a third, also yellowish, on the left side, at the mid point and looking to be within the nest structure. I will download the full resolution image and look for more.

thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 16:49 in reply to moonshine123
I have downloaded the image and straight away found a further three small birds - that totals six small and the large one, making seven, but I'll keep on looking.
thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 16:52
Was the metal frame installed to encourage the birds to nest there rather than on the nearby pylons?

thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 13:47
Ist das Boden oder Decke?

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 13:48
Ah, die Frage zum letzten Bild ist jetzt beantwortet. ;-)

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:50 in reply to thenecromancer
The ceiling is painted over and over.

Daintily done. Almost like fretwork.

thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 13:49
Great perspective. Guides the viewer up the stairs and entices them to the window.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:51 in reply to thenecromancer
But you HAVE to watch your steps!

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 16:55 in reply to moonshine123
Indeed. Do the steps curve around to the left at the top? It would seem odd to create steps merely up to such a small window.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:24 in reply to thenecromancer
Yes, they do, heading into this private chapel.

Thanks.

Ah, chairs for the naught choirboys ;-)

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:42 in reply to thenecromancer
Nope, this is inside the private chapel in the church.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 15:54 in reply to moonshine123
Yes, I know. I was joking.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 16:06 in reply to thenecromancer
The naughty choir boys have to stand in the corner, praying 100 Ave Maria!

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 17:27 in reply to moonshine123
Absolutely. In my young days as a choirboy and altarboy at the cathedral, we had to say it in Latin.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:31 in reply to thenecromancer
I never had latin in school, all I can say in Latin Iยดve learned from the Astรฉrix-Comics...

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 19:41 in reply to moonshine123
I adored the Astรฉrix comics as a youngster, though was not as captivated by the motion cartoons. I think reading Astรฉrix went some way to making me a Freelance Subversive.

What is the 'device' at the top of the stairs?

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:23 in reply to thenecromancer
Donยดt know either...

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 19:36 in reply to moonshine123
Now, I will most definitely have to visit.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 13:55
Perfect exposure.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:42 in reply to thenecromancer
Taken without flash, using a tripod.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 15:55 in reply to moonshine123
Yes, I expected so, on both counts, and it is in sharp contrast to the photo that follows.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 13:57
I wonder who was sealed up in there.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:44 in reply to thenecromancer
Thatยดs up to your imagination...

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 15:57 in reply to moonshine123
Indeed. Quite aside from being used as mausoleums, it was common practice to seal up church valuables such as altar silvers, etc, to prevent looting during the various reformations and vilifications of religions and churches throughout Europe.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 16:08 in reply to thenecromancer
Well, if it wasnยดt under monument conservation, I would take a hammer and gouge to check...

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 17:28 in reply to moonshine123
Be your very own Indiana Jones, raiding the lost Ark.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:33 in reply to thenecromancer
As long as I donยดt have to flee a 2,5 mtr in diameter stone ball, Iยดll be fine!

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 19:42 in reply to moonshine123
Me neither. The stone ball would undoubtedly outrun me now.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 13:58
Lovely capture of the erosion of the stairs. How many feet have trampled those steps over the years?

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:45 in reply to thenecromancer
Probably thousands of people. That church is almost 900 years old, and the kind of stone is not chosen very well, itยดs sand stone, highly erosive.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 15:59 in reply to moonshine123
Yes, I guessed that the church was at least that old and I noticed the widescale use of sandstone throughout the building - one of your other shots, from a window or fenestration of an upper gallery clearly emphasised the erosion of the sandstone. As steps, these have lasted remarkably well but in parts look to have been re-surfaced.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 16:10 in reply to thenecromancer
Unfortunately itยดs not allowed to change or even re-surface the steps because of the monument conservation.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 17:29 in reply to moonshine123
That is then all the more remarkable that they have endured so long.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:35 in reply to thenecromancer
Even a constant drop of water can create a big hole into a stone. It will take just its time...

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 19:44 in reply to moonshine123
Yes, I have seen such erosion. To the east of Liverpool, there is a town called St. Helens, which is on a bedrock of sandstone and many buildings there and in Liverpool are constructed from sandstone.

I adore the hues of light in this image. It is worthy of framing.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 16:12 in reply to thenecromancer
Did you saw the graffiti at the outside of the church? Itยดs dated from 1810, youยดll find it at pic No. 70.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 17:30 in reply to moonshine123
Yes, I spotted the graffiti but had no idea it was so old.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:36 in reply to thenecromancer
It might be difficult to hold the polluter accountable today.

thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 19:45 in reply to moonshine123
Maybe in Germany, but the Right-wing government in power in the UK would certainly have a go.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 13:59
I love how you have captured the light filtering down the stairwell.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 15:46 in reply to thenecromancer
Again plus tripod, minus flash.

thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 16:04 in reply to moonshine123
Of course. A tripod is ideal, even a monopod would struggle to capture such nuances without a degree of shake. I always carry a Manfrotto monopod with me when I take the DSLRs or SLRs for anything other than casual snaps. I always keep a Manfrotto tripod in the car boot too. Use of flash would totally have negated this image.

thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 14:04
Again, the light is beautifully captured here, @Moonshine123, and the tanning of the pages showing the age.

thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 17:33
If I ever return to Germany, I will make a point of visiting this place. I have a dear old friend in Hannover who I keep meaning to visit, so it is not too far from there.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:37 in reply to thenecromancer
You should. Itยดs definitely worth a visit!
thenecromancer
thenecromancer ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 2023-02-20 17:37
I wasn't sure if that is a crane or a pylon behind the church.

moonshine123 ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช 2023-02-20 19:38 in reply to thenecromancer
Itยดs an today unused crane in the background, inhabitated by a couple of storks too.
